NUMBER TRAIN • New UK Novelty Book
I have a new novelty book coming out in the UK today! Number Train is illustrated by Ingela P Arrhenius and published by Nosy Crow.
Like my first two books with Ingela, Alphabet Street and Christmas Street, it’s a lift-the-flap concertina book with a rhyming text, but Number Train is a counting book in which consecutive carriages hold a growing number of amusing animal occupants.
It can be read can be read as a conventional book or opened out to show all 10 carriages as a wall chart or free-standing play scene.
When readers reach the last carriage, they are invited to open out the reverse side of the train and spot and count all the animals who are now mixed together.
Nosy Crow put an extra novelty ‘spin’ on the book by adding wheels that turn to the front and back cover so it can be pushed along like a toy train.
As always, Ingela has done a brilliant job on the book’s illustrations, giving each carriage or wagon a colourful, distinctive design and filling them with amusing and appealing occupants. My favourite is Carriage 8, which contains a band of eight penguins playing musical instruments.
This trailer from Nosy Crow gives you a good look inside the book.
You can download a colouring sheet and a Can You Find? activity sheet, featuring 10 animal characters for young readers to spot inside the book, by clicking on the images below.
